As your home is being built, it’s helpful to identify the upgrades you want to perform right away. The nice thing about upgrading your home immediately is that these features are ready for you when you move in. The following are some of the main home upgrades to consider during the home build process as well as ones that you might want to postpone.

Home Upgrades To Do During the Home Build Process

  • Flooring: It’s easier to complete the flooring right away. Later on, you’ll have to move furniture and other items out of the way. Decide whether you prefer hardwood floor, tiles, carpets, or other materials. In some cases, you might have several types of flooring in different areas.
  • Cabinets: It’s convenient to install the cabinets you want during the home build process as it’s costly to replace them later. This is a central feature of the kitchen and the builders can usually accommodate your preferences.
  • Porches and Patios: The front porch and patio are features that you’ll want to have built along with the rest of your home. Decide on specs such as size, materials, style and color.
  • Crown Molding and Arches: Such decorative elements aren’t essential but can really add to your home’s beauty and uniqueness. This is an upgrade that’s easier to do right away than later on.
  • Garage Upgrades: If you think you’ll need additional space for your vehicles, storage, or other items, consider a garage upgrade. This could mean creating a larger garage than originally planned or even an extra garage.
  • Bathroom: Upgrading your bathroom with elements such as tile, a fancy shower or new fixtures adds comfort and style to your home. Since the bathroom is such a pivotal room in your home, why not upgrade it now?
  • Adequate Wiring: Homeowners often find that they lack sufficient wiring and outlets for all their needs. Make sure you leave room for plenty of lighting, cable and internet connections. It’s better to have more than you need than not enough.

Home Upgrades To Do Later

Unless you feel a pressing need for one of these features, you can wait until your home is built to have these home upgrades done.

  • Lighting: As noted, it’s good to pre-install plenty of wiring and outlets. The actual lighting fixtures, however, can be added as necessary.
  • Landscaping: It’s always possible to add landscaping features after you move in. You’ll probably enjoy taking on projects such as planting a garden, adding outdoor furniture, creating attractive pathways and other landscaping elements.
  • Pool: A swimming pool is a costly upgrade that you should really think about before you commit to it.
  • Closet Organizers: Once you move in, you’ll have a better idea of how much extra storage space you might need.
  • Other Upgrades To Do Later: Some other possibilities for future upgrades include ceiling fans, fireplace mantle, faucets, a new paint job, backsplash and anything else that will increase your comfort.

The home upgrades you choose will, of course, depend on your budget and preferences. The above, however, provide some guidelines on which ones you should consider doing right away and which can be postponed during the home build process.
